Sneakers, flats, laces, slip-ons, high-tops, leather, canvas, solid colors, patterns, and much more when it comes to shoes in todays world. Teens and tweens alike scour shoe stores looking for the perfect shoes to accent their back-to-school outfits. Shoes give fashion conscious students an option to display their personal style in an era where school uniforms, or dress codes are frequently the standard or, even dress codes that may restrict clothing choices.
Often if you listen to teens they will rattle off their favorite clothing. Often my daughters have spoke of American Apparel, Abercrombie & Fitch, Gap, and Hollister, and then we move to shoes. They blurt out Converse (All Stars), Nike, Jordon shoes, and on and on. One of my daughters mention shoes I’d never heard of “Twinkle Toes?”. I found out quickly that these are a sparkly shoe by Sketchers covered in bedazzled sequins, glitter, and flashing lights that is the current “it” shoes for girls. She simply said she loved them because they’re “Cool”, while raising her foot to show off the pair she already has.
There seems to be an approach many students follow in shoe hunting, and that’s wear what you know. My teens informed me that kids are buyin (Air) Jordans, Air Forces and Air Max shoes. It seems that they stick to the ones that are most popular right now. Or may I simply note that, ” Anything that has a jumpman symbol on it. ”
Air Jordons are the most sought after shoe for boys of all ages, and one of the best sellers around the country. There seems to be no shortage for the iconic shoe, including Retro versions bearing the classic Nike check mark on the side. Shoes that have a high top, and flat soles, like Nike Air Force, and the more classic Air Jordons, which are similar to the ones Michael Jordon himself wore during his on court domination in the 1990′s are the in deal right now.
Slip on Shoes
Middle and high school age children are drawn to the Vans and DC shoe lines, opting for slip-on or laced versions in different colors or patterns. Girls are also fond of Sperry slip-on boat shoes that come in basic tan or delicate patterns. It’s the convenience of being able to slip the shoe right on that seems to attract them. Kid’s don’t like to tie their shoes, so they may get the slip-on ones, or I’ve even seen my kids tie a knot in the lace ones so they can slide it on their foot.
Black and White
Black and white shoes are popular right now also. Black and white is easier and simpler, and goes with everything, as it doesn’t really cause a lot of problems with the dress codes. Dress codes get more strict each year, so plain colors mean you don’t have to worry about whether you’re in violation. But even youths who stick to simpler styles still want some added flavor. I recently seen my daughter checking out a pair of black Air Max with neon pink and blue accents while in the mall. Kids really like a lot of different colors, and they want things they feel are pretty and cool.
As a parent I know what kids like, as I get it drilled in my head by my children almost weekly. They want to impress their peers, and cost is not even in their minds at that age. I hope this article was helpful in knowing what kids like, and if you have children you most likely already know what I’ve been writing about.
